Peruvian Crop Report: November 2021

Greetings from Peru!

Our team members Walt Dasher and Jon Dorminey just returned from a week long trip to Peru to check on the status of the onion harvest. You can see some photos of our trip and current production at the bottom of this email.

We can tell you that they did the following:

  • chamba (spent a little time on work)

  • un par de chelas (drank a few beers)

  • ¡qué paja! (had an awesome time)

Besides learning to speak a few words with the locals, they already speak the language of onions and this week’s crop translation includes our transition to our late season onion crop with Arequipa district. Like crops more north in the USA as the seasons change, crops move south in Peru. The Arequipa District is in the far south of Peru and has the perfect climate for the next eight weeks. Our quality and size out of the Arequipa fields is good and we see no reason to expect any changes. That’s great news as we head into the New Year expect to have fresh sweet onions from Peru carry us into the local domestic sweet onion season.

Despite excellent quality, there continues to be some challenges with ocean freight and port delays, but we are trying to plan ahead to manage the unpredictability of these logistics issues to avoid any delays or out of stocks.

We are grateful for your business and hope you have a great holiday. If you still need a holiday side, may we recommend this family favorite of the Dasher’s.
