G&R Continues to Implement Sustainability Measures

Some things never change like our passion for growing and the pride we have in the onions we grow; one reason our dedicated customers have stood by us for years. We recognize that some things need to change, though, in order to grow, get ahead, and continue providing the best products. This is where G&R has taken a proactive approach to implement sustainability measures that benefit the employees, the company, and the planet.

In early 2022 G&R farmers began exploring the potential benefits of using electric forklifts in their packing facility as opposed to LPG, or propane gas, forklifts. To test the new equipment, we leased one electric forklift during our most demanding time of year, Vidalia season. We collected data including time in use, charge time, pollutions impact, and energy use, by installing a meter at the charging station.

After operating the electric forklift for two weeks and reviewing the results of the data, we discovered that the average energy cost for the electric forklift was $3 a day in electricity versus the LPG forklift that uses $33 a day in propane gas. Additionally, we were surprised and very pleased to learn that the forklift could be recharged to 100% capacity in 30 minutes, during lunch break, resolving concerns over energy level and downtime for recharging.

The forklift operator also noted several first-person benefits from operating the electric forklift. First, he noted the absence of heat coming off the forklift during operation. For those operating forklifts during warm months, this difference makes its operation much more comfortable. He also noted that, indoors, the electric forklifts could literally help keep indoor temperatures down, consequently reducing energy output from cooling costs. Lastly, he noted a drastic difference in the noise level coming from the electric engine, as it operates at a noticeably quieter decibel.

After continual testing for one month, we collected all data and had in-depth discussions with operators and their managers. The results were positive and indisputable, so we moved to bring an additional electric forklift in to support the loading dock. The new electric forklifts were delivered with single/double attachments giving the forklift full capacity. Again, we saw improvements in load times, noise reduction, and heat reduction in the loading area. We utilized both electric forklifts through the Vidalia harvest and the results were unsurprising. After reviewing the data and having more conversations with operators, we knew we were about to make a big change…

In May of 2022, we chose to remove six propane gas forklifts from our fleet and replace them with five electric forklifts. The new electric forklifts are highly efficient with their single/double attachments, successfully handling every job they are tasked. We’ve also seen a large reduction in LPG fuel usage, saving $30 a day, $900 a month, or almost $11,000 a year in propane use. We’ve also seen a positive impact on the environment through the reduction of heat output, sound output, and pollutants being exhausted, making our employees and planet happy.

Change can be hard, but at G&R we remain open-minded to the possibility that a newer, better solution could exist, and we’re willing to test them out in order to move forward. We will continue to search for ways we can reduce our carbon footprint while improving our efficiencies and work environment for our employees.
