With Vidalia season underway, we are excited to announce the installation of a new, high-tech grading and packing line. The massive project has been in the works for 8 years and is expected to be in full operation in the coming month.
The new grading equipment operates twice as fast as previous equipment and is more precise, maximizing packing efficiency and product quality. It optimizes accuracy in weight and size through the use of new, high-tech cameras (sizers), and provides delicate processing resulting in less mechanical damage to the onions. Due to the accuracy of the sizer, buyers and consumers will also find more uniformity in our onions, allowing us to ship exact customer specs noted in their preferences.
Over the years we have seen the onion industry suffer losses from processing damage, inconsistent size packs and missed quality issues. Our new line challenges nearly every obstacle with boosted accuracy and increased speed in packaging.
As we incorporate these new technological advancements, we are aware that inflation continues to persist and is top-of-mind for many in the supply chain. Our new equipment will allow for continued competitive pricing through increased speed and added efficiency and accuracy of the grader processing 72,000 lbs. per hour, a stunning 80% faster than our current line.
As we close out the Peruvian season, we are setting ourselves up for success in the following months. Implementing the new equipment will ease in-house pressures and allow us to fulfill large orders on demand, a service not all can offer.
At G&R we are always looking for ways we can improve. Whether sustainability efforts, company processes, or new equipment, we love finding new and better ways. It is at the core of who we are. While this new line is a great addition at G&R Farms, we’re already looking for the next great upgrade, update, or rework to help us do our jobs better for you.
