G&R Farms Continues its Commitment to Sustainability: Becomes Member of H2R Program

The benefits of recycling are clear, however, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) there are currently many challenges facing the system.

Americans generate more than 267 million tons of solid waste every year. While the United States has made some significant strides in recent years towards recycling, the country’s recycling infrastructure has not kept pace with today’s waste stream. Historically, some of the recycled materials generated in the U.S. have been exported internationally, but changing policies have limited the export of materials.

Although most Americans want to recycle, it can be difficult for consumers to understand exactly what materials can be recycled, how materials can be recycled and where to recycle different materials.

Plastics may look similar, but not all are created equally; some types are much harder to recycle than others.  Plastic bottles are one of the easiest and most widely recycled products. Drinking straws and packing peanuts, on the other hand, are much more difficult to recycle. It is estimated that, globally, only 18% of plastics are recycled.

Today, these changing consumer mindsets and increasing environmental concerns have placed sustainability top of mind for many businesses, including G&R Farms. As a third-generation family farm rooted in honesty and integrity, we believe it is our responsibility to help protect the environment for future generations.

G&R Farms is proud to announce our continued commitment to sustainability with our participation in the How2Recycle (H2R) program.

H2R is a standardized labeling system that clearly communicates recycling instructions to the public. Their mission focuses on taking the guesswork out of recycling and getting more materials into recycling bins. H2R is more than just a label – it involves a coalition of over 225 forward-thinking brands and members who want their packaging to be recycled and are empowering consumers through smart packaging labels.

As part of their H2R program commitment G&R Farms has already moved many recycling initiatives forward including recyclable boxes and bags, as well as using 20% recycled material in their film and netting on their bags.

Walt Dasher, Vice President of G&R Farms remarked, “Consumers want more than just quality; they want to feel that the products and brands that they purchase align with their personal values and that those companies are doing their part.” Dasher continued, “Consideration for recycling and sustainable packaging solutions has to be one of our top priorities as we help solve waste related problems.
